Kangaroo raw dog food is a great protein for dogs with lots of food sensitivities.
That’s because it’s not commonly used in premade raw dog food meals.
So yes, kangaroo dog food for allergies is a thing!
It’s also great for overweight dogs because kangaroo is a lean protein source for dogs.
Kangaroo can also be an excellent option in a thoughtful protein rotation plan. If you’re building a structured raw diet, this guide explains how everything fits together.
Beyond that, it’s classified as red meat.
But where can you buy kangaroo meat in the United States, Canada and Germany, and how do you feed it?
Also, is kangaroo meat expensive?
That’s what we’ll look at in this blog post.
Plus, as a bonus, you’ll get to peek into one of my raw dog food bowls where I used raw kangaroo meat.
You know, for raw feeding inspiration if you’re looking for some.

What’s In Kangaroo Raw Dog Food?
First of all, here’s what kangaroo doesn’t have a lot of: fat.
That said, there’s only about 2.5% of fat in ground kangaroo meat.
Here’s how that compares to the fat content in other ground meats:
- Camel: 1%
- Goat: 2%
- Rabbit: 2%
- Beaver: 4.8%
- Salmon: 6%
- Turkey: 7.5%
- Chicken: 8%
- Herring: 9%
- Lamb: 15%
- Duck: 15%
- Mackerel: 13.9%
Beef: Depends on how lean/fat your beef is.
Beyond the low fat amount, kangaroo has a decent amount of trace minerals such as iron and zinc.
Nutritional Benefits of Iron in Dogs
Iron helps create red blood cells and helps transport oxygen throughout the body.
Kangaroo has about 2.4mg of iron per 100g of meat.
Note: Spleen is the best source of iron for dogs. 100g of beef spleen for example have about 44.5mg of iron.
For comparison’s sake, here’s how much iron is in ground meats from other animals:
- Chicken: 0.82mg/100g
- Salmon: 0.8mg/100g
- Turkey: 1mg/100g
- Herring: 1.1mg/100g
- Mackerel: 1.6mg/100g
- Lamb: 1.6mg/100g
- Beef: 1.8mg/100g
- Duck: 2.4mg/100g
- Bison: 2.5mg/100g
- Goat: 2.8mg/100g
- Deer: 2.9mg/100g
- Ostrich: 2.9mg/100g
- Horse: 3.8mg/100g (commonly fed in the UK and Europe)
- Beaver: 6.9mg/100g
- Camel: 7.1mg/100g
I got these values from the Animal Diet Formulator app.
Nutritional Benefits of Zinc in Dogs
Zinc strengthens the immune system, and it’s important for wound healing, enzyme activation and thyroid hormone production.
Beyond that, it also contributes to dog skin and hair health.
Kangaroo has about 4.5mg of zinc per 100g of meat.
Note: Canned oysters are the best source of zinc for dogs. 100g of canned oysters for example have about 99mg of zinc!
Here’s how other raw meats compare:
- Beaver: 0
- Salmon: 0.6mg/100g
- Mackerel: 0.6mg/100g
- Herring: 1mg/100g
- Chicken: 1.5mg/100g
- Duck: 1.9mg/100g
- Deer: 2mg/100g
- Turkey: 2.3mg/100g
- Bison: 2.7mg/100g
- Horse: 2.9mg/100g
- Ostrich: 3.5mg/100g
- Camel: 3.9mg/100g
- Goat: 4mg/100g
- Beef: 4.5mg/100g
- Lamb: 8.9mg/100
Where to Buy Raw Kangaroo Dog Food in the US
It’s a bit tricky to find raw kangaroo dog food in the US because it’s not exactly a common raw dog food ingredient.
But that also makes kangaroo a novel protein, aka a hypoallergenic dog food!
All that said, personally, I’ve bought raw kangaroo meat from Raw Feeding Miami, but I know of a few raw dog food retailers that carry it.
Here’s the list:
Raw Feeding Miami (Miami, FL)
- Kangaroo chunks (boneless pieces of raw kangaroo leg meat)
- Boneless ground kangaroo (cut from kangaroo leg meat)
Oma’s Pride (Avon, CT)
Boneless ground kangaroo (leg meat)
Fetching Foods (Las Vegas, NV area)
Only Dog Kangaroo 16oz (available raw and gently cooked)
Here’s what’s in it:
- Kangaroo leg steak (“premium human-grade”)
- Kangaroo heart
- Kangaroo liver
- Whole fresh eggs
- Yellow squash
- Beets
- Carrots
- Kale
- Pomegranate
- Blueberries
- Parsley
- Dandelion greens
- Turmeric
- Astaxanthin (that’s a keto-carotenoid which is a powerful anti-inflammatory)
There’s a good article about astaxanthin on Dogs Naturally Magazine.
And here’s the guaranteed analysis:
- Crude Protein min 21%
- Crude Fat min 3.1%
- Crude Fiber max 1.1%
- Moisture max 74%
- KCalories/Ounce 30.1
Blackwing (Antioch, IL)
Kangaroo Dog Formula (boneless)
Exotic Meat Markets (Not sure about their location)
Exotic Meat Markets carries all sorts of raw meats intended for human consumption.
But hey, if it’s human grade, it’s perfectly fine to feed it to our dogs, too! The one downside is that it’s on the expensive side.
But if you have a big budget, this place is wonderful for sourcing unique meats to use in your raw dog food meal prep.
You can find their raw kangaroo meat selection here.
Kangaroo Dog Food Canada
As far as where to find kangaroo dog food in Canada, here are the raw dog food retailers who carry kangaroo that I’m aware of:
- Big Country Raw: Pure Kangaroo Carton, consists of kangaroo, ground kangaroo bone and dehydrated kangaroo liver
- Rawbone Pet Food Co: Pure Kangaroo, consists of ground kangaroo meat
Kangaroo Raw Dog Food Germany
Since I currently live in Germany, here are the German raw dog food retailers I’m aware of that sell raw kangaroo meat:
- BARFER’S: Känguru gewolft (ground kangaroo)
- BARFER’S: Känguru am Stück (chunked kangaroo)
- Das Tierhotel: Kängurufleisch gewolft (ground kangaroo)
- Barftime: Känguru (ground kangaroo)
- Haustierkost: Känguru (ground kangaroo)
How Should I Feed Kangaroo Raw Dog Food?
From browsing the shopping options above, you probably noticed that most retailers offer boneless kangaroo only.
So essentially kangaroo muscle meat.
That means you’d still be needing to add (secreting) organs, raw meaty bones and oily fish or fish oil.
Also, kelp as an iodine source unless you feed thyroid glands.
So having said that, here’s some recipe inspiration!
Raw Dog Food Recipe Inspiration with Kangaroo
Total amount: 140oz = 8.75lb
- Ground or chunked kangaroo: 79.5oz = 5lb
- Mackerel: 14oz
- Turkey neck: 18.5oz = 1.1lb
- Lamb organs (liver, kidneys, spleen, heart, lung): 14oz
- Eggs: 3 ( I used duck eggs, but you can use any egg)
- Spinach & dehydrated red beets: 14oz (I rehydrated the beets with bone broth, but water works too)
- Kelp: Add fresh to daily meals:
- Dogs can have 1/4 teaspoon per 10 lbs of body weight per day. That said, their daily kelp intake should not exceed 3 teaspoons of kelp.
Note: You can grab kelp powder from Raw Paws Pet Food here and save 15% with my affiliate discount code K9Savings.
I used the Olewo red beets for dogs. They’re a great addition for an anti-itch protocol for dogs.
Feeding guidelines:
- Feed 4 oz for every 10 lbs dog weight (dogs up to 30lbs)
- Feed 3.2 oz for every 10 lbs dog weight (for dogs between 30-100lbs)
- Feed 2.8 oz for every 10 lbs dog weight for dogs over 100lbs

Bonus: Kangaroo Dog Food Brands As Alternatives to Raw Kangaroo
There are a few alternatives for raw kangaroo dog food, but I’m not listing the ones with insanely long ingredient lists:
For example, air-dried kangaroo dog food:
- Addiction Outback Kangaroo Feast Dog Food (air-dried, also features potatoes, but this is grain-free kangaroo dog food)
Also, kangaroo canned dog food:
- Zignature Kangaroo Canned Dog Food Formula (limited ingredient kangaroo wet dog food, with chickpeas, peas and a jelling agent called agar-agar made from red seaweed)
And, of course, kangaroo dry dog food:
- Zignature Kangaroo Dog Food (limited-ingredient, features chickpeas and peas)
Last but not least, there’s a few kangaroo dog treats, too:
- Scout & Zoe’s Kangaroo Dog Jerky (includes a little sea salt)
Or you could just go ahead and make your own kangaroo dog jerky from kangaroo chunks that you put in a dehydrator!

I have a cat with Inflammatory Bowel Disease on a special diet, who can tolerate kangaroo. I’m really surprised that my dog with stomach issues has problems with kangaroo – just in case anyone else out there has issues.
Hey Lisa, thanks so much for sharing that. Yes, there’s no protein that’s guaranteed to work for EVERY dog (or cat). But some are much more likely to work than others – such as kangaroo and rabbit. Does your pup tolerate rabbit? That tends to work for most dogs, although there are also some (rare) exceptions.
