I’m excited to let you know that we’re close to our 5 months raw-feeding anniversary! It has been and still is an ongoing, intriguing learning experience. It has been accompanied by regular “Oooh’s” and “Aaah’s” as well as an occasional head shake.
What’s up with the latter? Well, I have come across a number of raw feeding myths which inspired me to create a mini-series of myth busters I’ll be sharing with you over the next 5 weeks.
We recently had a vacuum sales rep in our living room (which reminds me to buy those “No solicitor” stickers…) who did his best to convince me to buy a $3,000 vacuum wonder. #NeverEverWillIEver
Either way, since Missy & Buzz were hanging out in the living room with us, we got to talking about their raw food…to all those sales reps out there: My dogs will inevitably become part of our conversation. Deal with it.
As soon as I mentioned “raw”, he froze and asked “As in raw meat? With blood and everything? Doesn’t that make them aggressive?”
Myth # 1: Raw-Fed Dogs Are Aggressive
Well, let’s take a VERY close look at my pups Missy & Buzz while they’re devouring their raw dinner…who wants to take a very wild guess at what will happen to the human (= me) recording their feast?!
As you can tell, I’m still alive. Even better, I wasn’t harmed one bit. Food aggression has nothing to do with the particular food a dog is eating, but it’s rather the outcome of how he has been raised, socialized, and trained.
Missy & Buzz are not food aggressive because I taught them from 8 weeks of age onward that feeding time only happens when they’re calm & relaxed. They learned to eat with my hand in their bowl and consequently would never growl at me or bite me, regardless of whether the content of their bowls is dry or raw food.
Side Note: When I taught them to accept my hand in their bowls, they were on a kibble & wet food diet; we then moved on to a homemade diet, and then began feeding raw earlier this year!
