I checked off green tripe for dogs from my to-feed list! Yay! My pups Missy & Buzz have been eating raw dog food for a few months now, and they loved their green tripe.
So far, they had some freeze-dried green tripe treats earlier this year (which they loved!), but they had yet to get their paws on the real, raw deal.

What Exactly Is Green Tripe For Dogs?
Green tripe is the nutrient rich lining of the stomach of a ruminant animal. For example cows, deer, sheep, goat, or deer.
βGreenβ means that the tripe has not been cleaned, bleached nor scalded. The bleaching process actually destroys all the valuable nutrients tripe comes with, and is the kind you can find at grocery stores.
The Benefits of Green Tripe for Dogs
Green tripe is a natural, nutritional powerhouse that dogs go bonkers for. Missy & Buzz are no exception!!
Green tripe is easily digestible because it contains high amounts of digestive enzymes (probiotic lactobacillus acidophilus = good intestinal bacteria). That said, it’s great for treating both diarrhea and constipation.
Its thick & chewy texture along with its gastric juices helps keep those K9 pearlies clean.
Green tripe also has the perfect ratio of calcium to phosphorus: 1:1. Itβs important to feed our pups the right amount of both of those essential minerals. That’s especially true when feeding homemade raw dog food.
Good to know: raw meaty bones are another source of calcium and phosphorus. Defective bone formation is one consequence of an imbalance in calcium & phosphorus in a dogβs diet.
Green tripe is also rich in amino acids. They’re the building blocks of protein, and a diet lacking in them causes eye & heart diseases.
It’s also rich in essential fatty acids, both Omega-3s and Omega-6s. They’re important for a healthy skin & coat, joint health, and keeping inflammation away from the body.
Overall, green tripe provides a wonderful boost to any dogβs immune system! A true Superfood!

How To Prepare The Frozen Green Beef Tripe from Raw Paws Pet Food
The ground green tripe arrived at our front door solid frozen, which meant that it had to thaw first before the pups were able to eat it!
I placed it into a large casserole dish and let it sit in the fridge for about a day and a half. It was still not completely thawed, but I was able to cut it into smaller portions using a sharp knife on a cutting board.

I then measured out 3 oz (85 gr) portions of tripe using my digital kitchen scale and lots of plastic food storage containers. The pups each had 3 oz of tripe mixed in with their raw breakfast and dinner over the next 5 days (60 oz).

They had the remaining 20 oz as little snacks here & there. I gave them a little at first to get them used to the new food.
Suffice to say that they INSTANTLY loved it and, of course, had no trouble digesting it. I also used some for our video review.

How does the Raw Paws Pet Food Beef Green Tripe ship?

As mentioned above, the green tripe arrived in a 5 lb solid frozen tube. How is this possible given the fact that it had to travel from Indianapolis, IN to the Ft. Bragg, NC area (about 650 mi = 1000 km)?
Well, it was shipped via FedEx Home inside an insulated βThermoSafeβ Shipper which was filled with dry ice and packing peanuts!

Update 2020: Raw Paws Pet Food no longer carries the 5 lb green tripe tubes, but has several other units of green tripe for sale!

Are There Any Cons?
Iβll be honest with you β green tripe tends to be a bit on the smelly side. Itβs kind of an earthy smell. If you truly can’t get past the smell, you could get your pups the freeze-dried version.
It’s still super healthy and smells MUCH less, and works great as training treats or food toppers for picky eaters.

Since I donβt have an overly sensitive nose, I don’t mind it too much. PLUS, any food that comes with all those amazing health benefits can have a little smelly side to it.
